The world’s second-largest drug company, Pfizer Inc., has been fined $1 billion for selling illegal erectile dysfunction drugs, the latest in a series of fines that have been handed down to companies with a proven track record of helping consumers get the medication they need. The drug giant has also been accused of illegally marketing the pills to doctors, thereby causing the FDA to remove the pills from the market.
In May, Pfizer Inc. announced it would not sell its drugs for more than a year and the company would pay a fine of $1 billion to resolve the charges.
The FDA’s decision was announced by the agency’s Office of Criminal Investigations (OCI), which found that Pfizer Inc. and a group of other companies had promoted the erectile dysfunction drugs to doctors through “unfair and deceptive” means, including the marketing of the drugs to doctors. The FDA said it did not know the names of the companies, but the OCOI found that several of them were operating in “unfair and deceptive” ways.
The FDA has been investigating the drug marketing scheme and it has ordered that Pfizer Inc. pay a $1 billion penalty for this illegal marketing.
“This is an unprecedented violation of our legal system,” said FDA Commissioner William F. Merrell Jr. in a release on the agency’s website. “The pharmaceutical industry and its regulators have been making millions of dollars trying to get this drug approved and to hold Pfizer accountable. This case represents an unprecedented and blatant violation of the law.”
